FRAU stands for Females Re-enacting Axis Units. The group was started in 2008 with the aim of bringing female axis re-enactors together. The idea of FRAU had been in the pipeline for sometime, but was fully implemented at the start of the 2008 season. Whist the group is currently small the idea is growing rapidly with lots of interest and exciting opportunities being offered to our ladies.
The group (FRAU) does not ask that everyone has sole membership to WARS, though PLI/membership is offered to those wishing to join in and it certainly makes things easier if we are under the same cover. All we do ask that you have PLI cover with the group you currently work with and that you allow them to find out what this group is about and why you are interested in it.
FRAU is not interested in removing females from the groups they already work within, as we know how few and far between these female re-enactors are and how much of an asset they can be to the group they hold membership with. Note this also includes females that do non axis portrayals, that would like to try something different. If you have group PLI already, we don't mind, infact we'd love you to come and join us, and the offer is there anytime and we hope eventually to be able to provide the loan of kit for a display should you wish to see and talk about the roles of axis females.
We want to bring the women of this hobby together and be able to provide some fantastic displays, whatever they may be. One helferin/female on a display is good, but to see lots of females working together (and of course having fun ) really is a crowd stopper and shows far better what the women did when they pull together. This was proved at the War & Peace show in 2008 where we had the honour of manning the Thetford Tank Museums display of a downed spitfire as flakhelferinnen. To have four females dressed and actively taking part in the display made more of an impression than any of us had received as individuals on seperate displays.
FRAU is also a completely family friendly group. This means we can offer females with children, the opportunity to enjoy the hobby and bring the kids with them. This means we can make the hobby open to people that may have felt previously they couldn't for this reason.
